The 13th Avenue Food Corridor Keeps Filling In
The most concrete change in Nampa this year is edible. Downtown's south end has quietly turned into the densest new-restaurant cluster in Canyon County.
The headliner is The Smoky Pickle, a new pickle bar and BBQ restaurant opening this spring just off 13th Avenue in downtown Nampa. Owner Nate Lindskoog is not a stranger to the block. He and his team have owned and operated the Tower Grill in Nampa for the last nine years. The address is 112 13th Ave. S., and the menu leans wide rather than regional: wood-fired BBQ styles from all over the country, including Texas-style brisket, southern-style spare ribs, pulled pork, and Santa Maria-style tri-tip, plus BBQ beans, mac n' cheese, loaded baked potatoes, dill pickle slaw, and potato salad on the sides. The tagline is genuinely on the sign: "All you need is smoke, pickles, and prayer."
A short walk away, Birreria el Semáforo, a Nampa Mexican restaurant named after co-owner Fernando Mora's food truck Tacos el Semáforo, offers birria in a number of dishes, including burritos, tortas, and tacos. Diners on Yelp keep coming back to the same three items: quesabirria, birria melt, and horchata. If you have been ordering the same thing at the same taquería for a decade, this is the swap worth trying.
The sushi scene also gained depth. Another location of an established sushi restaurant in Nampa is now open for business. Sushi Sushi is a casual sushi and Chinese food restaurant, which means Nampa now has two of them rather than one. Four independent food concepts opening or expanding inside a walkable core, all in one calendar year, is not the shape Nampa had five years ago. It is the shape it has now.
